A Double Kick Off Day & a Six Point Return For the Foxes

Updated: Oct 30, 2023

Foxes strike 4 each to go top of their tables.

October 1st saw a double bill for the Foxes, as the Leicester Men continued their march towards the Championship top spot, whilst the Leicester Women kicked off their Super League campaign just two hours later. So how did both teams get on in their Sunday winners?

Leicester Seal Confident Win in Championship Battle in Ex-Premier League Winners Tie

In a match that was billed as the big clash between title winners meeting for the first time in England's second division, must've felt underwhelming as competition as a strong Leicester side comfortably swept Blackburn away to return top of the league.

The match started well with a strong attacking mindset, a few minutes in Fatawu whipped in a good ball that was tipped over by an unsure Pears to grant the Foxes an early corner. Which was immediately capitalised on as Faes headed in the quick set piece, sticking Leicester ahead within four minutes. Unfortunately, that lead didn't last long as a short pass from Hermansen was quickly pressured by the opposition before it was struck into the back of the net by Szmodics. The game remained 1-1 for another 20 minutes before Ndidi played a fantastic pass, finding Vardy who took a clean first touch before powering a brilliant shot in at the near post. Sticking the Foxes back in the lead and taking the 2-1 lead with them into half-time.

Second-half underway chances were had by both sides, before the Foxes made their first change, exchanging Fatawu for McAteer, who unfortunately was removed shortly after as he sprinted for a loose ball before pulling up and going to ground seemingly pulling something. (The injury is currently expected to see the player out for 4/6 weeks) A big blow for the club and player as McAteer has been on absolute fire for the club this season. Still, in the driving seat, the Foxes are rewarded with a penalty following a foul on Vestergaard in the box, which is calmly dispatched by Iheanacho to extend the lead. Looking to continue the goal-scoring run Yunus played a great ball down to Dewsbury-Hall who made a great run goalwards before delicately dinking the ball over the keeper, making it 4-1, and seal victory for the Foxes.

All in all, it was another great run out for the Foxes, with plenty of great build-up play and strong attacking moments. However, some fast breaks at the back by Blackburn looked worrying and the pressured goal felt avoidable. Still, that feels like small gripes in what was a great performance overall.

Leicester Women Sit Atop The WSL Table After Strong Opening Day Victory

Sunday saw the Women's Super League return, and with it a whole host of matches as each team looked to kick start their season with a big 3 points. Leicester arguably had one of the best chances to start the season with a win as they travelled to newly promoted side Bristol City for their opening fixture.

Things for the Foxes didn't start so well as the team went 1-0 down following a strike from Carrie Jones deflecting its way into Leitzig's net. Thankfully The Foxes managed to regroup and grab a goal for themselves just before half-time following an absolute wonder strike from midfielder Aimee Palmer against her former club. (If you haven't seen it yet, check it out, it's a beauty and a half).

Following the break City substituted on new signing Rantala and Green, in place of Palmer and Thibaud as the Foxes continued to push on for the win. With the switches paying dividends almost instantly at 49 minutes in Shannon O'Brien fired the ball into the bottom left corner, putting Leicester in the lead. Not to rest on a 1 goal lead just 3 minutes later new signing Petermann whipped in a strong header following a Foxes corner to further the lead to 1-3. Wanting to keep control of the game the Foxes managed to find yet another goal from Rantala who made it 1-4 at 83 minutes with a cleverly struck goal, all but ensuring the 3 points for the Foxes. That wasn't to be the final score as two minutes later a late challenge gave Bristol City a penalty, which despite Leitzig diving the right way Amalie Thestrup still managed to slot the ball away to see the game out at 2-4.

With the Foxes continuing to improve season on the season it's very strong showing by the Foxes, as they opened their 23/24 season with a big win and confident performance. All whilst three (yes three!) new Foxes got themselves debut goals in the fixture! With the win secured and a positive goal difference the women now sits top of the table. This weekend sees a tougher match ahead as the Foxes will look to extend their winning form in a home clash against an Everton side defeated and looking for their first win.

Come on you Foxes. 🦊
